In each of our minds we have a full complement of internal influencers. What are your influencers? They can be emotional, intellectual, physical, and environmental. Cultivating an awareness of them is the first step to thinking critically about the role we have allowed them in our everyday lives. Examining what they are, their positive and negative traits, and their origin is all important. From here we can ask a vital question as to whether or not they are ‘serving’ us, our goals, our vision, and how we approach life’s myriad of challenges.

Some detective work, introspection, and subsequent re-evaluation are often the perfect prescription.

Seven Vital Ideas to Guide a Successful Refocus

1. Perception is Powerful

“Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery; None but ourselves can free our minds.” & “Free your mind, and the rest will follow”… as it turns out Science is proving there is something to those thoughts.

Choose to think outside of the trappings of constant victimhood. If something is negative, seek the positive that it can bring into existence.

As Mary Oliver asks in her Summer Days poem “Tell me, what is it you plan to do, with your one wild and precious life?”

Answer that with your heart, & enlist your mind as an ally in perceiving your life with positive virtues in appropriate measure.

2. Explore Alternatives

We only know what we know. Keep an open mind and go seek to discover what you haven’t considered. Actual, reasonable, workable solutions are out there. There are options. Make use of a global online world at your fingertips. Get connected and find suggested strategies that you can implement in your situation. Find inspiration from people who have overcome challenges and have valuable encouragement to give!

3. Goals are Good

Goals are a vital first step in actualizing change in our personal and professional lives.

If there are things you want to change or transform in your life, it is worth drawing up a list of goals & detailing what might be required to achieving them. Pro-actively consider what obstacles might arise, creating interference on the path to achieving them. These could mental or physical. Investigate them! Next, identify a first actionable step & live it!

4. Exercise Perseverance

Don’t lose hope because you suffer setbacks. Challenging ourselves creates inherent opportunity. It may not always look familiar but it is there. Exercising patience in the pursuit of goals, nourishing resilience, and working through with persistence are all gifts we receive when things don’t go to plan. Rather than dismiss them, embrace the process and find character-building gems that can transfer into all areas of life and improve its quality!

5. Seek Support

Support systems should not be underestimated. When the storms hit (and they will), support systems act as safety nets. Keeping us from hitting rock bottom they also serve to build us up after we’ve fallen. Isolation can be a motivation killer and good support shores us up by reminding us that our identity doesn’t have to be defined by one single snapshot moment, we are stronger together, our vision matters, and diligent work is worth it. Don’t dismiss the unique contributions that you bring! Stare the fears down that want to steal your confidence & consistently nourish your hopes with actions. Each of us has something we offer to the table, don’t let the world miss out on the beauty of you!

7. Practice Gratitude

Gratitude is a game-changer. Choosing to look at life through the lens of counting one’s blessings doesn’t mean wearing rose coloured glasses. It means choosing to give more attention to what is right in our lives. There is always more than one way to look at any given setback or situation. Deciding to search for the good makes an appreciation for the adventure in the unknown and not-perfect in life, bearable and maybe even beautiful!
